Effects on Climate Change

October 21,2009
Stop Climate Change. Members of the Visayas Climate Change Action Networks and the members of the Global Legal Action on Climate Change called for Climate justice, as they made protest in front of the Department of Energy regional office seven in Osmena Boulevard in Cebu city yesterday morning.
The picket was made to stop the off-shore mining and for the closure of the coal-fired power plants in the Cebu province. According to them the continuing operation of the power plants will lead to the destruction, disaster and even death to Cebuano people. One example is in Naga Cebu, coal ash was spread all over the municipality and dumped even in the bodies of water contaminating some water sources.
“According to scientific studies, the Philippines will severely affect by the climate change that is why there is a need to abandon the sources of the fossil fuel to address the problem” according to Vince Sinchez, convenor of Visayas Climate Action Network. The group is calling for the use of renewable energy instead of the use of the non-renewable source of energy. They are also calling for the support in the community and other organization to get more supporters. If there is still no action made for their dispute, the group will file complaints against the department of energy and other involved agency to the Supreme Court.
